There are numerous types of businesses that you can start as a minority. You could start a service-oriented business, or a product-oriented business. We'll look at some examples of each in further detail.

Example Service-Oriented Businesses

Here are some ideas on the types of businesses you could start quickly, and with little to no up-front investment: - virtual assistant - personal shopper - consulting - typist - graphic designer

To get started, it is usually a good idea to try out some projects on a project-basis so you can see how you like that type of work before you pursue it as a full-time business and invest further effort in it. A great way to get started on a project-basis is to respond to job postings on project-based web sites, or to post your own listing.

For example, is you are a graphic artist/designer, a great way to get work is through project-based web sites such as 99designs.com or elance.com. Those sites allow people to post project descriptions and those interested in doing the work can respond to it. In fact, elance is a great web site for project-type work across various industries.

Many people overlook the fact that the government and large corporations also buy every type of service you can imagine, from typing, to janitorial services, to marketing services, etc. If you are interested in having the government and large corporations as clients, then you should definitely consider obtaining an MBE certification so you can increase your chances of getting them as clients.

That should give you a few ideas on the type of service business you could start from home. Now let's look at some ideas you could consider for starting a product-based business.

Example Product-Oriented Businesses

There are thousands of different products that you could sell as a minority-owned business.

Let's look at some examples of the types of products you can consider selling. You could sell an information product that contains some special knowledge or training (such as a training video, ebook, etc.). You could then sell this on your own web site, or through affiliate programs such as clickbank.com. An easy way to accept credit cards is through Paypal.com. You could become an affiliate and sell products that are offered by third parties. You can find products through affiliate programs such as Commission Junction or Clickbank.

And don't forget, that the government and large corporations also buy nearly every type of product you can imagine. This was described in more detail in the services section above.

If you have products that the government or large corporations might be interested in buying, then you should definitely consider pursuing an MBE certification to increase your chances of getting projects from them. You could also consider being a broker for the government and buy products from third parties that they are looking for (after adding your own margin - of course!).
