I've used job search websites many times in the past, only to become highly discouraged by the results. It can become very discouraging when you want to do a local job search, and the only job listings that pop up are located in various parts of the country.
Not every website functions the same, so it's important to find the one that will be most helpful for you. Some are very detailed in their search criteria, while others only let you search very broad categories.
When I have done a local job search in the past, it was those websites with broad options that aggravated me the most. I would be directed to job openings nearly 50 miles away from my house, which wasn't very convenient as I lived in the suburbs at the time and relied on public transportation.
I feel those job search websites with very clear and detailed search options are the most helpful. Unfortunately not all websites offer such specific categories.
In the past when I had this kind of trouble, I would just turn to local papers and classifieds. But even then, some local businesses don't post jobs in the local media, so I will still having trouble.
Thankfully, since then, many of these job search websites have enhanced their search options. Their distance variables aren't as broad as they used to be, which helps out so much with a local job search.
It's not just the distance criteria that need improvements. Many of these websites have expanded all the categories in all available criteria. There was a time when I could only choose from a handful of job categories, and this of course doesn't make much sense.
I'll be on the lookout in the near future to see how many of these resources improve the navigation for users. More job categories are appearing these days, and those seeking local jobs need better options.
